Do's and Don'ts of Lip Filler in Brighton

Fillers Brighton

The most common reasons for why people are unhappy with the shape and size of their lips are that the natural ageing process has made their lips to appear thinner and less defined or that their lips have always been narrow with a less pronounced cupid’s bow.

Some people may have asymmetrical lips and look to restore balance or create proportion.

Lip Filler treatment in Brighton, also known as Lip Augmentation, is a popular procedure which addresses many lip concerns nd can be performed at our Brighton clinic.

Today, there are many varieties of lip fillers on the market, but the most widely used fillers are made of Hyaluronic Acid, a substance found naturally in the body. When injected into the lips, Hyaluronic Acid can enhance shape, structure or volume. Hyaluronic acid is very biocompatible as it already exists in our body resulting in it having a very high safety profile.

The body breaks down the Hyaluronic Acid over period of months, thus the results of lip fillers are temporary.

Here are some common DOs & DON’Ts when preparing for lip fillers:

  • DO stay well hydrated and drink plenty of plain water before and after having filler injections. HA fillers are highly attracted to water and bind to moisture, if your body is dehydrated the filler will break down faster.

  • DO take anti-viral medication couple of days before your treatment and continue for a week after, if you have a history of cold sores, as sometimes the injections could trigger an outbreak. The can be discussed at your consultation appointment at our clinic in Brighton

  • DO expect swelling, slight redness, tenderness and an itching sensation in the treated area, immediately after the procedure. This is normal following filler treatment. Depending on how your tissue reacts to the injection, your lips may look bigger than intended, this is again completely normal and will generally improve within few days to weeks.

  • DO use a cold compress after the treatment to sooth the area, minimise bruising and reduce swelling

  • DO sleep with two pillows under your head, the elevation will help to reduce swelling.

  • DON’T take anti-inflammatory medication (e.g. aspirin, ibuprofen, Neurofen) and Vitamin E, fish oils, gingko biloba, and ginseng, during one week before your treatment and 24 hours after, as these can potentially thin the blood and make the treated area more prone to bruising or bleeding.

  • DON’T book your Lip Filler Treatment right before an important event. Regardless of the technique a doctor uses, there will be a degree of swelling and even possible bruising after the procedure. If it’s your first time having lip fillers and you don’t yet know how your tissue will react, allow at least 7-10 days between the treatment and the event in case you bruise or have lingering swelling.

  • DON’T rub or massage your lips for 5-7 days., thereafter, you can even out any lumpiness (which is very rare with HA fillers) by gently massaging your lips, only if instructed by your clinician.

  • DON’T exercise and do avoid vigorous activities on the day of your treatment and for 24 hours after. You especially should avoid activities that increase blood flow to your face, like getting a massage or a facial.

  • DON’T expose the treated area to intense heat such as sauna, solarium or sunbathing, until the swelling has resolved, normally up to 3-5 days.

  • DON’T drink any alcohol couple of days before and 24 hours after treatment.

  • Always contact your clinician if in doubt about any aspect of the pre-treatment preparation or post-treatment care.
