What is the difference between anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers?

April 29, 2018

Anti-wrinkle injections and dermal fillers are synonymous with each other but their treatment aims and modality are very different. Let’s break things down and look at the differences between the two.

Anti-wrinkle injections

What is it and how does it work?

Botulinum toxin type A is a neurotoxin that blocks signals from the nerves to the muscles that are injected. The muscles can no longer contract or move as much intern causing wrinkles to relax and soften.

What are the treatment aims?

To soften and reduce dynamic wrinkles (wrinkles that appear when you move your face) It isn’t used generally to target static wrinkles (wrinkles that are present when your face is at rest); for this dermal fillers may be a more appropriate option. At the consultation appointment Dr Bejal will discuss in depth what you can expect from the results of anti-wrinkle injections at our Hove clinic.

What areas can be treated?

  • The upper face can be treated very successfully- primarily the forehead, frown lines and crow’s feet.

Other treatments include:

  •  gummy smile

  • chin pebbling

  • downward corners of the mouth

  • bunny lines (lines on either side of your nose when you laugh or squint)

  • brow lift

  • smokers lines (lines around the mouth)

  • jaw slimming

  • neck lift and neck band reduction

  • hyperhidrosis (excessive sweating)

What are the side effects?

Generally they are minimal, but the injection sites may be slightly painful, there may be bruising also. Sometimes the forehead can feel tight and you may experience a headache following treatment. Rarely, you can get eyelid swelling or drooping of the eyelid. Although unpleasant these do pass as the anti-wrinkle injections wear off.

Who should avoid this treatment?

  • Aged under 18 years

  • Known hypersensitivity to Botulinum toxin

  • Neuromuscular disorders

  • Active infection at the proposed treatment sites

  • Pregnancy

  • Breast-feeding

  • Clients taking muscle relaxants

  • Skin disorders at injection site

  • Bleeding disorders

  • If you are taking blood thinning medications

Dermal Fillers

What are they and how do they work?

Dermal fillers are injectable materials used to reduce static wrinkles and treat lost facial volume or enhance volume that wasn’t present before. The most widely used type of dermal fillers are made of hyaluronic acid. At Azure Aesthetics we use this type of dermal filler at our Hove clinic exclusively.

What are the side effects?

  • Temporary redness, swelling and tenderness
