Don’t break a sweat- excessive sweating treatment

April 19, 2018

Sweating is a normal and natural bodily function. However, for an estimated 1% of the population excessive sweating is an embarrassing and often limiting problem. The most commonly affected areas of the body are the palms of hands, soles of feet and underarms.

Underarm excessive sweating can have a major effect on people’s lives by them constantly trying to hide sweat patches which can interfere with work and day to day activities.

Things you can do to help with excessive sweating

  • Wear loose fitting clothes to minimise the signs of sweating

  • Stronger over the counter antiperspirants instead of deodorant

  • Armpit shields to protect your clothing

  • Soap substitutes that are gentler on the skin

  • Foot powders for sweaty feet

If none of these options suffice you may be referred on to a specialist

They may recommend alternative treatments such as:

  • Taking tablets to reduce the sweating

  • Treating the areas with a weak electric current (iontophoresis)

  • Botulinum Toxin A injections

  • Surgery

Underarm sweating is generally very successfully treated with Botulinum Toxin A injections. It requires multiple small injections into the hair producing area of the armpit. Numbing cream can be applied prior to treatment. Generally you notice a difference in about 2 weeks following treatment and the results can last for up to 6 months!
